There’s something for everyone at the National Library this April. We have a new instalment in our Deadly Dialogues series, a talk about the life of an award-winning Australian children’s author and craft workshops to celebrate the release of NLA Publishing’s newest title, Vintage Crochet.

  • Panel discussion: A woman’s place is in the…Assembly!
    Sunday 7 April | 2pm to 4pm | $10
    The National Foundation for Australian Women presents a panel discussion about women in ACT politics, where 3 trailblazers in Canberra politics will reflect on their experiences and the difference elected women make. This event is part of the Canberra and Region Heritage Festival program.
     
  • Vintage Crochet WorkshopsTuesday 9 April and Saturday 13 April
    Tuesday 9 April and Saturday 13 April | 10am to 1pm | Free
    Come and participate in a hands-on crochet crafting session as we explore vintage designs and techniques. Whether you're a crochet beginner or an expert, there's something for everyone to learn and enjoy in this interactive activity.
    The Saturday workshop will be capped off with a delicious High Tea service.
     
  • Vintage Crochet with Friends
    Thursday 11 April | 10.00am to 12.30pm | Free
    Step into the timeless world of crochet and join us for a Friends-exclusive instructional workshop and talk by Melody Lord, editor of Vintage Crochet. Facilitators from the Crochet Guild of Australia will guide the session and participants can partake in activities geared towards every skill level. Light afternoon tea will be served.
     
  • Deadly Dialogues: Joe Williams and Alethea Beetson
    Wednesday 17 April | 6pm to 7pm | Free
    Joe Williams and Dr Alethea Beetson in conversation as part of our Deadly Dialogues series. Deadly Dialogues celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and their journeys through in-conversation style events.
     
  • Christobel Mattingley: Life, worlds, words with Dr Melanie Duckworth
    Thursday 18 April | 12.30pm to 1.30pm | Free
    Dr Melanie Duckworth will present a lecture on her 2024 National Library Fellowship research into award-winning Australian children's author Christobel Mattingley’s manuscripts, papers and published works.
     
  • School holiday activity: Working with wool workshop – Tuesday 23 April
    Tuesday 23 April | 12pm to 2pm | Free
    Join us these school holidays for a craft workshop where children will learn some basic fibre crafts. Activities will include spool knitting, pom pom making, crochet, felt craft and make friendship bracelets.
     
  • Spanish mapping of empire with Dennis Reinhartz and Robert Clancy
    Wednesday 24 April | 6pm to 7pm | Free
    Come and join American cartographic expert Emeritus Professor Dennis Reinhartz as he discusses the exploration and charting of the Americas and the Pacific undertaken by the Spanish from the 15th to the 18th centuries with map collector, curator and author Emeritus Professor Robert Clancy.
     
  • 2025 Fellowship applications are open
    Researchers and creators are encouraged to apply for fellowships offered by the National Library of Australia. Applications for National Library of Australia Fellowships and Creative Arts Fellowships close Monday 6 May 2024.
